1. The Physics of Cabinet Traps: Helmholtz Cavity Resonance
When you place a loudspeaker inside an enclosed cubby or hollow shelf bay, you physically create a Helmholtz resonator.
As soundwaves exit the speaker cabinet, the enclosed wooden cavity amplifies a narrow band of low-mid frequencies (typically between 100 Hz and 250 Hz). This acoustic buildup creates a "chest resonance" effect: human dialogue begins to sound boomy, muddy, and as if the actor is speaking through a cardboard tube.
Furthermore, smart speakers often feature side-firing waveguides or upward-firing height channels. Boxing these transducers inside wooden walls traps high-frequency reflections inside the furniture bay, preventing spatial soundwaves from ever dispersing into the open living room.
2. Complete Sonos Model Cabinet Compatibility Breakdown
Not all Sonos hardware behaves identically inside enclosed furniture. Here is how each speaker handles cabinet installation:
Sonos Ray (Soundbar)
✓ 100% Approved for EnclosuresThe Sonos Ray was specifically engineered for enclosed credenzas, media cubbies, and shelves. All four acoustic drivers (two tweeters, two mid-woofers) and its custom low-velocity bass reflex ports fire strictly forward.
Installation Tip: Ensure the front grille sits flush with or slightly proud of the shelf lip to prevent comb filtering off the lower board.
Sonos Beam (Gen 2)
⚠️ Semi-Enclosed OK (Conditional)The Beam Gen 2 features angled side arrays to simulate surround channels psychoacoustically. While it has no physical upward height drivers, tight enclosed cubbies will choke its side soundstage width.
Installation Tip: Leave at least 8 to 12 inches of open air on either side of the Beam, and always pull it fully forward to the console edge.
Sonos Arc & Arc Ultra
✕ Never Enclose (Critical Failure)The Arc and Arc Ultra are 45 to 46 inches wide and pack dedicated up-firing Dolby Atmos compression drivers. Placing either soundbar inside a cabinet cubby traps the height beams directly into the furniture roof, completely destroying spatial audio immersion.
Installation Tip: Must live on top of an open surface or wall-mounted with a 4" to 5.5" TV drop gap.
Sonos Era 100
✓ Shelves & Kallax ApprovedWith its dual angled tweeters firing forward-left and forward-right, the Era 100 fits comfortably inside standard IKEA Kallax 13"x13" cubes or open media bays while leaving sufficient side breathing room.
Installation Tip: Leave at least 1 to 2 inches behind the speaker for passive bass reflex ventilation.
Sonos Era 300
✕ Never Enclose (Ruins Spatial Audio)Even though the Era 300 physically fits into a Kallax cube opening, doing so is catastrophic for audio quality. The top-firing Atmos horn shoots directly into the shelf ceiling, and the side drivers fire into the shelf divider walls.
Installation Tip: Requires at least 2 feet of open air above and 8 inches of flanking side space.
Sonos Five
⚠️ Vertical Only (Cut EQ Bass)At 36.4 cm wide horizontally, the Five does not fit into a standard 33 cm Kallax cube horizontally. It can only fit vertically (which switches the internal DSP to mono). Its massive bass output will also trigger severe wooden box boom.
Installation Tip: Place on vibration decoupling pads and cut the Sonos app bass slider by -2 to -4.
Sonos Sub Mini
✓ Open Media Bays OKBecause of inward force-canceling drivers, the Sub Mini's cylindrical cabinet does not vibrate mechanically. It can sit in open console alcoves without rattling glassware or adjacent decor.
Installation Tip: Keep both open ends of the center tunnel at least 2 inches clear of furniture walls.
3. Three Mandatory Rules for Cabinet Speaker Setup
Rule 1: Pull Flush to the Front Lip
Never push a speaker back against the inside rear wall of a shelf. If the front grille sits several inches inside the cubby, sound reflects off the shelf floor directly in front of the speaker. This causes comb filtering, which creates destructive acoustic interference in vocal frequencies.
Rule 2: Decouple with Silicone or Rubber Pads
Hollow wooden consoles act like acoustic soundboards. Placing dense silicone isolation feet or an acoustic dampening pad underneath your speaker prevents mechanical driver energy from transferring into the wooden boards.
Rule 3: Retune EQ to Tame Cavity Boom
If putting a speaker like the Beam or Five inside an open cabinet bay, manually lower the Bass slider to -2 or -3 in the Sonos app (or run Trueplay with your phone) to compensate for cavity resonance.
4. Recommended Accessories for Console & Shelf Setups
Upgrade your cabinet acoustics and maintain clean wiring with these verified accessories:
Sonos Ray Soundbar (Cabinet Certified)
Best for CubbiesThe only Sonos soundbar with zero side or top ports. Fits inside 24" wide media console bays without causing acoustic distortion or wall-bounce issues.
Silicone Acoustic Isolation Feet Pads
DecouplingSelf-adhesive non-resonant silicone feet that raise speakers 3 to 5 mm off wooden shelves, eliminating resonant buzzing and cabinet vibrations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put a Sonos speaker behind cabinet doors with fabric mesh?
Only if using acoustically transparent speaker fabric. Standard fabric or rattan weave will muffle high frequencies and reflect treble back into the cabinet. The Sonos Ray is the only model recommended behind fabric doors.
Can the full-size Sonos Sub go inside a media console?
Only in very large, open console compartments with at least 4 inches of clearance around the central force-canceling tunnel. Alternatively, the full-size Sub is better suited laid horizontally on rubber feet under a raised sofa.
